Malcom Gladwell – Blink

Summary: „Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking“ is a book about how we think without thinking, exploring choices that seem to be made in an instant — in the blink of an eye — that actually aren’t as simple as they seem. Gladwell argues that decisions made in an instant can be just as good, if not better, than those made after long, cautious consideration, referring to such snap decisions as „thin-slicing.“ The book’s premise is that our first impressions pull upon our subconscious mind, as we make judgments in the first few seconds based on knowledge accumulated over our lifetimes. However, Gladwell also explains how an expert’s ability to „thin slice“ can be corrupted by their likes, dislikes, prejudices, and unconscious stereotypes. The book serves as both a study in how deep experience can lead to accurate snap judgments and a reminder about the blindspots that may affect our perceptions of others.

Why we like it: Gladwell’s book „Blink“ is a masterpiece of putting topics like „overthinking“, „gut feeling“, „experience and expertise“, „judgement“ and „blindspots“ into perspective. Its conclusions are super impressive and shows us that decision making is not always an easy topic to deal with. We love it.
